Walmart Trip 4-14-11

At home unloading my goods... yes I'm in pajamas. And Ellie if you're reading this, these are the pj pants you bought me a couple of years ago when I spent the night at your house and didn't have pj's with me :)

The checkout lady told me that Walmart in Orem, UT now DOUBLES COUPONS up to $1.00 on TUESDAYS!!!! I about had a heart attack I was SO freaking excited! If I had know that I would have gotten the carnation evaporated milk, the pickles, and vinegar for FREE!!!! I would have gotten the cookie mix for $.20 an extra $.40 off of yogurt (basically giving me one for free), and another $.25 off the jam.

Now I know, and I'm only shopping there on Tuesdays! Oh my goodness, I'm so excited about this!! Now I know I'll be able to get some stuff for free, YIPPEEE!!!!  Too bad not all Wally Worlds are doing this.  Apparently Lindon, UT Walmart is doing this too.

Total savings in coupons about $22. Total savings in Price Matching, not quite sure but I probably saved about $65-70 with price matching.

That's an awesome discovery about Wal-Mart. At least we'll know to ask at other Wal-Marts if they do something similar. Maybe some of the coupon sites you visit have already told you about this, but smartsource.com also has online coupons, which you can print and use on top of coupons.com coupons. Pretty awesome!

Target

I think that shopping with coupons at Target is frustrating...

It is nice because you can combine a manufacturer coupon with a Target coupon for extra savings but honestly I think Target prices are more expensive that Walmart so it would be just as cheap to only use the manufacturer coupon at Walmart.

Here's what I got at Target for about $15.  I had a gift card too (thanks Mom) so I only had to pay $3 OOP (out of pocket)

Not the most successful trip and the cashier wouldn't let me use all my coupons... He wouldn't let me do all 4 waters and all 4 packs of gum in one purchase because the coupons said only one per transaction. If he knew anything he'd know that it's okay...  So I just ended up going through someone else's line to get the other 2 waters and 2 packs of gum. Lame.

Coupons

Too bad they didn't have this coupon out last week on www.coupons.com

I would have saved about $7.50 if I had this coupon for half of my powerades... although most of what I bought wasn't Powerade Zero but I would have bought those instead if I had the coupons. Dangit!! I searched everywhere for coupons like this last week but there were none to be had.  Well I'll go ahead and print them and be ready for next time powerade is on sale for $.39 each... with this they would have been about $.20 each. Craziness.

More about my shopping trip

Some of the other things I do on my big Walmart shopping trips...

• I organize my shopping list in the order the store is laid out. That way I won't forget anything on my list and have to run to the back of the store to grab it.

• If hate it when I'm in a hurry and all the lines are long so I just pick one... then I find out after I've been standing in line for 20 minutes that the person in front of me is price matching or doing food stamps.  I always wish they had warned me before I got in line behind them.  Because of this I like to tell the people getting in line behind me that most of my (overflowing) cart is price matching and so it will take longer than a normal transaction.  Most people are very grateful that I told them and then they pick a different line. Occasionally the person doesn't seem to mind and they stay in line behind me.  At least they were warned :) 

• I always try to find a clerk that looks nice (there is one guy at the Orem, UT Walmart that is always such a grumpy check out guy that I avoid him at all costs. His line was shorter the other day when I went but it wasn't worth it to me). 

• The clerks have never made me show them the ad except this time they wanted to see it for the roast that I was buying. They want to make sure you get the right grade of meat because there is usually a huge price difference. I didn't have the ad so I didn't end up getting the meat, I was not about to pay full price for it. 
• I do take the ad if I'm price matching something other than food. I took the ad for the movies I was price matching but they didn't even ask to see it. From now on I'll take it for meat too.

• I separate my cart as I'm shopping to have all the items that aren't price matched in one section so I can put those on the counter first. That gives me a little bit of time to arrange the rest of my stuff on the belt in order of how my shopping list goes. That way it is easier for me to tell them the price matched price for the items.  This time I was buying quite a few little items like makeup and nail clippers at regular price (some plus coupons) so I actually put a shopping basket in my cart to hold all those items. That way the wouldn't slide out of the cart and then I just piled all my other regular priced items in the basket. This made it really easy when it was time to check out. All my stuff was separated. The only problem was the basket had been buried by other things so I ended up having to do the regular priced items last.

• Then after everything was rung up I handed the lady my coupons one by one. In the past I'd give them the whole stack but I think they didn't scan all the coupons when I did that. And I read on some lady's blog that she handed them one by one to make sure they all went through so that's what I do now too. Overall the shopping trip went really well and I was able to get my price matching on everything except the roast I mentioned earlier. All the coupons went through and I didn't have any of the dreaded beeping when a coupon doesn't work.

Coupons & Price Matching

I haven't been grocery shopping (other than buying very basic things like milk) in about a month.  I have no idea what we've been eating except I know we've had too many trips to Taco Time.

I've spent the week preparing for this Walmart trip. I know that sounds silly but it's true.  Usually people just make a list of things they need and then walk up and down the isle of the store and get that stuff along with a bunch of random things.  I think this is the first time I went to Walmart and ONLY bought things on my list! Yippee! No impulse buying for me!

So, how did I prepare for my trip?

• I made a list of items that we really do need or want from the store
• I went through all of my newspaper grocery ads and looked up ads online for local stores that I didn't get a newspaper ad for.  I went through the papers and wrote down items I was interested in that had awesome prices (32 oz. Powerade at Smith's for only $.39  Awesome deal). I also wrote down the best prices I found for items that were on my list of things I need.

• I even found and read some blogs where people were telling awesome prices they found on things this week. Example - Stove Top dressing is usually $1.68 a box and was on sale somewhere for only $.77 (plus a $.50 off coupon per box made it only $.27 CENTS per box, crazy cheap)
• Okay I got ahead of myself on the last bullet point.... Coupons are the next thing I did.  I scoured the web for printable coupons for all of the items on my shopping list.  I was able to find a coupon for most items on my list (other than produce).  Here's some examples of the coupons and price matching that I did.
• I got coupons for cereal (originally $2.60 ea. price matched for $1.88 then used $1 off 2 boxes coupons making it $1.38 per box for Kellogg's cereal)  Some crazy coupon ladies are able to get their cereal for less than a dollar a box but I'm just starting out at this so give me a break :)
• Coupons for the Wheat Thins and Triscuits originally $2.98 a box, price matched for $1.99 a box and then I had a $1 off 1 box coupon for each one making them only $1 each! Yippee!
• Coupons for the Stove Top as previously mentioned... made them $.27 per box.
• Yoplait Yogurt, originally $.58 each, I price matched for $.38 each and then I had a $.40 off 6 coupon and a coupon for a free one.  That averages out to $.27 each! Sweet! 
• Cake Mixes + icing,  cake mix originally $1.50 and I price matched for $.88 each. I had to buy icing at regular price (I couldn't find an ad for it anywhere) by buying the mix and icing I was able to use a coupon for $.50 off. Not a great deal but I needed mix and frosting so it wasn't terrible.
• I searched high and low for powerade coupons but unfortunately I couldn't find any that hadn't expired. Man, I'm sure I would have made money off of it if I could have found coupons.  Walmart gives you overage on your coupons. So if you have an item for 50 cents and a coupon for 1 dollar off that item they will give you either 50 cents cash (if that was your only item) or they will discount 50 cents from your total purchase price. Walmart is one of the only stores that does this.  I know Target doesn't.
• Scotch-Brite kitchen sponges - I had a coupon for $1 off a purchase of ANY 2 Scotch-Brite products.  These sponges were only $.88 each so I got one for free and the other for $.66 
• I calculated it and I saved a wopping $72.03 in price matching and $22.08 in coupons.     
  
  I saved a total of $94.11!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

• TheKrazyCouponLady  this site also has great information on how to coupon as well as different store's coupon policies. I think I could spend hours on this site learning about couponing.
• You can always google the manufacturer of a product and look around on their website
• Also if you have a facebook account, search for the company's fan page, click that you like them, then look around on their page for a coupon.  Not all companies have this feature but it's worth a try.  You can always scroll to the bottom of their page and on the left you can 'Unlike' them after you get your coupon.

Old Navy Deals

So, I was feeling a huge urge to go shopping tonight. It was 5:30 and Shawn needed the car at 6:30 but I decided to leave and go shopping anyways. I headed to a little strip mall that isn't far from our house. My choices were Famous Footwear, Ross, Old Navy, and TJ Max. I decided to go to Old Navy and look in the clearance section. Lucky for me all clearance was an additional 50% off!! I scored pretty big!

I got a couple thin sweaters. I don't like big or bulky sweaters. I walk so fast everywhere that I get really hot once I get in a building and I don't like having on thick clothes. I got a turquoise sweater, a white one, and a yellow one. I also got a pink long sleeve shirt that I do not plan on wearing in public. This shirt has a shiny dragon fly on it -- GAG but it is just fine for a long sleeve pajama shirt which I was in desperate need of. I also got a cute 3/4th sleeve shirt.
All this came to a total of $23! That is pretty stinkin' good! I was pretty proud of myself and with so many purchases, I didn't feel to jipped that I had to race home to get the car back to Shawn so he could go to scouts/young mens.
Oh yes, and I failed to mention that, yesterday, I convinced Shawn to buy an amazing sweater at Kohls. The sweater was originally $45 but it was on sale for $8 ! I'm working on getting Shawn to wear clothes nicer than t-shirts, so this sweater was a huge leap for him! He is always very cute, but he looks very handsome when he dresses like a grown up! ;-)
